High School Broadcasting Students Travel State

In late May, Indiana’s Secretary of Education, Dr. Katie Jenner, joined Ball Brothers Foundation staff on a day-long visit to schools across Delaware County. While visiting Burris Laboratory School, Dr. Jenner met students in Mr. Rob Jones’ emerging media class. They shared their love for creating “hype videos,” and Dr. Jenner challenged the students to produce a back to school video that could be shared with students and educators from across the state.

Mr. Jones and his students accepted the challenge. They spent three days and 36 hours traveling over 1,500 miles across the state. Their team drove from Indiana Dunes National Park to the Ohio River in New Albany, capturing footage from dozens of schools in between. In reflecting on the journey, Mr. Jones shared that they spent the time on the road “exploring places they have never been and making memories they will never forget.”

The video was shared widely by Dr. Jenner and the Indiana Department of Education, shining a spotlight on Burris Laboratory School and Muncie/Delaware County. The video has already been watched over 1,000 times by viewers from across the state and beyond.

Ball Brothers Foundation is proud to have provided funding that has been used by Burris Laboratory School to start the emerging media program, a popular course offering for Burris students. Through this program, the school is able to live-stream school concerts and athletic events while students gain real-world experience with broadcasting, film production, photography, and more.
